Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, so she was raised by her mother, grandma and godparents. As a young girl, she was diagnosed with an obsessive compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety because of the word association. Ford began acting during her teen years and joined part of the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she didn't fit in. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford didn't graduate until 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Also, she was a regular performer in the theatre, eventually being a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. But Tate was soon gaining recognition for her stand-up comedic performances, which she added to her resume in the year 1996.
